Course Overview

This 5-day course teaches you how to install and configure NNM i-series and the NNM iSPI for Performance in your environment so that you may discover and monitor your network according to your service level agreements. You will learn how to view network incidents and visualizations, and troubleshoot network faults. The course is 50% lecture and 50% hands-on labs.

Audience:

HP Customers: System and network administrators who need to install, configure and maintain NNMi in their environment. HP Partners, Support Engineers and Consultants who need to learn how to install and configure NNMi for their customers

Prerequisite:

Before taking this course, you should have completed the following training:

• System administration experience on MS Windows 2003 or HP-UX
• Fluency with network device terminology, IP addressing, SNMP, and MIB concepts
• Familiarity with Java, XML, JBoss, and Database concepts is helpful

• Position NNMi within the BTO Software Portfolio
• Describe how NNMi helps Network Operations meet SLAs
• High level overview of NNMi operation
• Describe the NNM iSPI for Performance and position it relative to Performance Insight

Installing NNMi 8.x / 9.x

• Fulfill installation prerequisites
• Complete the NNMi installation process
• Use the Quick Start Configurator to initialize the NNMi software
• Verify NNMi installation
• Tour the NNMi Management Console and become proficient in basic operation

Configuring discovery and monitoring

• Review Communication Layer architecture and operation
• Configure SNMP and ICMP access defaults, regions, and for specific nodes
• Review Discovery architecture and operation
• Configure Auto-Discovery
• Configure discovery seeds
• Configure device profiles
• Review Status Monitoring architecture and operation
• Configure polling groups and intervals
• Configure monitoring modes (managed, unmanaged, out of service)
• Verify monitoring settings

Configuring users

• Describe roles available in NNMi
• Configure user accounts and map to roles

Monitoring incidents and nodes

• Review incident views
• Review detailed information available with incidents
• Interpret root cause incidents
• Change incident classifications
• Assign incident ownership
• Progress an incident through the lifecycle
• Review inventory and monitoring views
• Review detailed information available about a node, interface, or other object
• Perform troubleshooting actions from tables, forms, or maps
• Update object status or configuration information

Configuring events

• Review event monitoring architecture and operation
• Modify event defaults, including category, family, severity, and message
• Add a new event configuration
• Configure event correlation

Administration and troubleshooting of NNM

• Start and stop NNMi processes and services
• Backup and restore the database

Coexistence with NNM 6.x or 7.x

• Forward events from NNM 6/7 to NNMi
• Launch NNM 6/7 interface from NNMi incident

Installing and using the NNM iSPI for Performance

• Install NNM iSPI for Performance and integrate with NNMi
